New description:

 on my system (ubuntu 5.10, gaim 1.5.0, guifications
 2.12, gnome-screensaver 0.0.15) the guifications still
 pop up when my screen is blocked.

 locking the screen should make it entirely black and
 should cover the entire space, but the guifications
 seem to ignore that. no other app does it that way, so
 I guess there's a bug somewhere.

 don't know if the screensaver is ignored also. I
 usually blank my screen to save power.
