New description:

 After installing Guifications, I tried to enter
 Japanese text in a chat window using Windows IME. After
 typing a Japanese word, it appears in the input box as
 a series of boxes. If I send the message, close the
 window and re-open it then looking at the message
 history at the top shows the Japanese characters
 correctly. I uninstalled Guifications and this problem
 stopped.

 I really don't think this is at all related to guifications.
