 I'm going to take a stab in the dark, but bear with me.

 The mentions above about gf_item_text_init could very well be the cause.
 In that function we load a freetype2 font map (which has caused other
 issues).  Anyways, I'm willing to bet that pango is trying to unreference
 fonts and so on, it's throwing a warning and we're at the classic
 printf("%s", NULL); on windows segfault.

 I'd be curious if this happens with newer versions of pango.
