 I (or anyone) might not have Pidgin open all the time, I might switch
 instant messengers in the future ...

 I'm not a hacker, so I have no idea how practical this idea is, but
 perhaps you could take a hash of the uncompressed image and compare to
 that? If that would result in too much overhead, do it once (when
 archiving) and store it in a simple list file?

 As I said, IAMAH, I'm just querying whether this would be possible or
 practical, as as an end-user I think it would be more ideal if it is
 possible.
