 It didn't. I checked that box on an account used with irc.freenode.net and
 another one with irc.perl.org. After a network interruption I was logged
 back in with a nick that had the last character replaced with the digit 1
 on both services.

 I have not linked my alternate nicks on freenode, as suggested here. I'm
 told that's not an option at irc.perl.org, and it seems like there should
 be a more general solution. Other IRC clients don't seem to have this
 issue, yet apparently provide auto login functionality.
